City feels heat from just a few gun crime hot spots

GUN crime is heavily concentrated in a few areas of Sydney - the Fairfield area has recorded more than 400 incidents in the last six years, compared to just five in Hunters Hill.

A breakdown of official figures shows that gun crime has fallen across Sydney. Nevertheless, the director of the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, Don Weatherburn, said it was a concern that so much of it was occurring in only a few areas.

A University of Western Sydney lecturer and former detective, Michael Kennedy, said: ''If you remove the Ibrahim-related stuff I think more than half of the crime would be gone.''

This was because the events were targeted, aimed at others involved in organised crime, and not just members of the public.

That was small comfort for Essam Khedr. His home was struck by a stray bullet during the shooting in Old Guildford on Sunday night. It ended up lodged in a flyscreen door, only metres from where his wife and six young sons had been watching television. Mr Khedr has been searching for a new place to live. He wants to move far away from Fairfield.
