Teen charged over wheelchair bashing
From: AAP March 11, 2010 6:06am

A SECOND Sydney teenager has been charged over the bashing of a disabled Canadian tourist.

Police say the 35-year-old male victim was attacked by two youths at Mount Druitt station in Sydney's west on Tuesday night while on his way home after seeing friends play in a band.

bash
If you bash someone or something, you hit them hard in a rough way.

burglar
A burglar is a thief who breaks into houses and steals things.

Man not guilty of Irishman's brutal bashing
From: AAP March 16, 2010 3:51pm

A YOUNG Sydney man who admitted to the brutal bashing of Irishman David Keohane has been found not guilty of his attempted murder by a Sydney jury.

Mr Keohane, 29, was bloodied, bruised and left for dead in a deserted Coogee street after being attacked by the stranger in the early hours of August 9, 2008, the Downing Centre District Court was told.

Thomas Isaako, 21, of Bankstown, told police that after drinking at the Coogee Bay Hotel, a companion suggested they "roll" someone, which he said meant "bash someone and take their stuff".

Mr Keohane was picked because he was the only person the pair could see in the street, he said.

A 27-YEAR-OLD prisoner on remand for rape has been found dead in his cell at a Brisbane jail.

Staff found him in his cell at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre just before 11am (AEST) today.

Medical staff attended but he was declared dead at 11.20am.

The Department of Corrective Services said he had been on remand since October last year.

The area where the prisoner died has been locked down as the incident is investigated.

The death will be investigated by the coroner and chief inspector of prisons.

Somebody is remanded.
Or somebody is on remand.

Woman kills boyfriend on Xmas Day, texts friend to see if he'd like to help eat body
From: AAP March 22, 2010 1:54pm

MOMENTS after she stabbed her boyfriend to death on Christmas Day, a NSW Central Coast woman sent a text message telling another man she was going to eat the body because "I think he tastes good".

In the NSW Supreme Court today, Tamie Melehan admitted to killing her boyfriend, but pleaded not guilty to murder by reason of mental illness.

David Vaughan, 30, suffered 16 stab wounds to his neck, six to his chest and four to his abdomen during the frenzied knife attack by his girlfriend of three months at her apartment on December 25, 2008.

An autopsy revealed his jugular veins had been slashed on both sides of his neck and he died from those "rapidly fatal" injuries.

tremor
1. A tremor is a small earthquake.
2. A tremor is a shaking of your body or voice that you cannot control.

- Winslow felt a little tremor of excitement.

magnitude

radius

Much hyped iPad hits the market
April 4, 2010, 5:12 pm

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Apple's hotly-anticipated iPads are finally in consumers' hands in what the maker of iPods and iPhones heralds as a personal computing revolution.

While Apple Stores were thronged for the iPad debut in the United States Saturday and the California firm was flooded with pre-orders, analysts said it remained to be seen whether the tablet computers would transform culture.

"We think it will be a success no matter what," Gartner Research vice president Ken Dulaney told AFP.

"Tablets have not done well in the past. If Apple changes that paradigm, they are on a new road."

。。   hyped, herald, throng and debut.

hype
If you describe the publicity for something such as a new film as hype, you disapprove of it because it is very intensive and exaggerated.

herald
Something that heralds a future event or situation, or is a herald of it, is a sign that it is going to happen or appear.

throng
When people throng somewhere, they go there in great numbers.

debut
The debut of a performer or sports player is his or her first public performance or recording.

THREE men are in hospital after a stabbing in Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to Barkley Street, Brunswick, about 1am (AEST) today after a resident found three injured men at the front of her home.

A 28-year-old and 33-year-old had suffered stab wounds to their upper bodies, while a 23-year-old had a head injury.

The trio were taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition, an Ambulance Victoria spokesman said.

"Investigators would like to speak to anyone who may be able to offer information on how the men were injured," a police spokesman said.

"They are particularly keen to speak to a taxi driver who was seen in Wilson Street at the time of the incident and who may have picked up other persons involved in the incident."

A young Melbourne couple suffered serious injuries in a terrifying attack by a group of burglars who were in the pair's home when they returned from a night out.

The 24-year-old man and 20-year-old woman arrived at their Burnside Heights house in Melbourne's west at about 9pm (AEST) on Saturday.

After parking their car in the garage, they went inside and were stunned to find a group of offenders in their Giverny Close house.

They were separated, taken into different rooms in the house and assaulted, police said.

The offenders demanded cash and ransacked the house.

The attack lasted about fifteen minutes before the assailants left.

The victims suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital by ambulance.

2. doing burnouts.
Burnout.

3. urine test

4. die at the scene

Burnout

September

In Latin, septem means "seven" and septimus means "seventh";
September was in fact the seventh month of the Roman calendar until 153 BC, when the first month changed from Kalendas Martius (1 March) to Kalendas Januarius (1 January).

September marks the beginning of the ecclesiastical year in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
September begins on the same day of the week as December every year, because there are 91 days separating September and December, which is a multiple of seven (the number of days in the week).

Sydney traffic congestion is no worse - government
From: AAP May 19, 2010 3:51am

THE New South Wales government has rejected a NRMA report which says Sydney traffic has become worse in the past 12 months.

Transport Minister David Campbell says the motoring group's survey of under 400 business customers is anecdotal.

The minister says Road and Traffic Authority figures show traffic congestion in Sydney has remained constant for almost two decades.

But the NRMA's defended its survey methodology and says it also knows businesses have begun to move away from the city because of congestion.

Bear Grylls films Man Vs Wild in north Queensland
By Geoff Shearer From: The Courier-Mail May 28, 2010 7:00am

THIS is the first glimpse of TV's adventure man Bear Grylls during his trek to far north Queensland to film episodes for his international hit series Man Vs Wild.

This sneak peek shows him wading through crocodile-infested waters at Mount Borradaile, situated near the Cooper Creek floodplain in north-western Arnhem Land.

"Australia is a wild ride," the former British Special Forces officer said.

Grylls was in the state for two weeks this month filming an episode on Murray Island in the Torres Strait and one in Arnhem Land.

"Those were two of the most full-on shoots I have ever done – crocs and sharks and mosquitoes like none other," Grylls said.

In Man Vs Wild, Grylls challenges himself to survive in some of the world's toughest and most forsaken environments. Before production, he meets with local experts and guides.

State Tourism Minister Peter Lawlor described Grylls' visit as a coup for Queensland.

The episodes will go to air in Australia on the Discovery Channel early in 2011.

From: AFP June 01, 2010 8:27pm

SCUFFLES have erupted in Taiwan as activists alleging labour abuses by IT giant Foxconn tried to enter an exhibition centre where President Ma Ying-jeou was opening Asia's biggest technology fair.

The protesters, who were shouting "capitalists kill people" and holding placards and pictures of Foxconn chief Terry Gou, fought with uniformed police as they tried to deliver a letter to the President while he launched Computex Taipei.

Five other IT tycoons, including Apple chief executive Steve Jobs and Cher Wang, chairwoman of Taiwan's leading smartphone maker HTC Corp, were also targeted.

Foxconn, a unit of the Hon Hai group, makes a range of popular products including Apple iPhones, Dell computers and Nokia mobiles phones.

"All the products on display at the exhibition inside are made with workers' sweat and blood," demonstration leader Liu Nien-yun said.

A JAPANESE rock musician who tried to hang himself after being arrested following unruly behaviour on a Delta Air Lines flight to the US-administered Northern Mariana Islands has died in hospital.

Rocker Taiji Sawada, who was best known as the former bass player with heavy metal group "X", died today when medics at Saipan's Commonwealth Health Centre turned off his life support, the Saipan Tribune reported.

The Marianas Variety newspaper reported that Sawada, 45, had been in intensive care since July 14 after he tried to hang himself with a bedsheet in a jail in the Pacific territory.

He had been arrested three days before for allegedly assaulting a female cabin crew attendant during a Delta Air Lines flight from Tokyo to Saipan, court documents showed.

The documents, filed on the Northern Marianas District Court, said the flight attendant went to the business class section after hearing banging and found Sawada struggling with a female passenger.

The crew member said a number of male passengers helped her subdue the musician and move him to another chair but he caused another commotion, punching windows and kicking seats, as the plane prepared to descend to Saipan.

Eventually, the plane's captain ordered Sawada to be placed in physical restraints and he was arrested after the flight landed, the court documents said. No reason was given for Sawada's behaviour.

Sawada enjoyed success with "X" in the late 1980s but left in 1992 and since then had played in various other bands, according to fan websites.

Wild weather drenched coastal NSW yesterday with sodden Sydney recording its wettest July day in 23 years

WILD weather drenched coastal NSW yesterday with sodden Sydney recording its wettest July day in 23 years - and you better get used it.

Almost 80mm of rain fell in the Sydney CBD, and experts are tipping the rain will continue until next week.

"It's just miserable, at least for the next few days," Weather Channel meteorologist Hannah McEwan said.

The record downpour almost ended in tragedy for one seven-year-old boy, who slipped into a stormwater drain and was swept away. The torrent carried him beneath a roadway near Newcastle for more than 50m before he managed to cling to the side of the drain and call for help.

SES crews were later called to the Corpus Christi Primary School at St Ives, in Sydney's north, after torrential rain flooded part of the campus.

A severe weather warning for dangerous surf remained in place from the south coast to the mid north coast last night, with offshore wave heights of up to 10m.

Ms McEwan said waves pounding the coastline would continue to grow to a peak of about 4m tomorrow.

The deluge brought down trees and tore open roofs from the Illawarra to the mid-north coast, prompting more than 250 calls for help to the SES.

A 10m eucalyptus smashed four demountable classrooms at the Mt Warrigal Public School School south of Wollongong.
