I would almost expect a course on the sociopolitical or economic ramifications of Blizzard Entertainment’s hyper-successful StarCraft, but a college class that actually teaches gameplay fundamentals? According to Joystiq, the University of California, Berkeley now offers such a class.
Admittedly, it isn’t the free ride you might imagine: The class is only offered on a pass/fail basis (meaning it can’t affect a student’s overall grade point average) and the course is offered as a "democratic education" class in which students much first receive official permission to essentially learn on their own.
Still, one look at the course’s description makes all those hours stuck in Underwater Basketweaving 101 seem positively mind-numbing:
This course will go in-depth in the theory of how war is conducted within the confines of the game StarCraft. There will be lecture on various aspects of the game, from the viewpoint of pure theory to the more computational aspects of how exactly battles are conducted.
Calculus and Differential Equations are highly recommended for full understanding of the course. Furthermore, the class will take the theoretical into the practical world by analyzing games and replays to reinforce decision-making skills and advanced StarCraft theory.
There is no word on whether the course will be expanded to include the upcoming StarCraft 2.
