Skype Open-Source Update Expected SoonPosted by Michael Larabel on March 29, 2010
Back in November there was an official announcement from Skype concerning an open-source Linux client. Details since then have been scarce on what exactly Skype plans to provide as open-source software, with some speculating just the user-interface/front-end side will be opened up. Skype though has continued in recent months of providing new Linux betas of their closed-source Linux client that still has yet to reach a feature parity with the Skype Windows client. No open-source Skype news updates have come since their original blog-style announcement.

However, we have been tipped off that in April there should be at least an update from Skype on the matter concerning their Linux support and this scant open-source project. Details are still being gathered and we will have updates accordingly.

The very popular Skype VoIP service has provided a Linux client for some years now, but it's not nearly as full-featured as its Windows counterpart, and right now it's a binary-only application. However, things may be partially changing at this company that's in the process of being spun off from eBay. There's a new blog post on Skype.com entitled Skype open source. It's officially confirmed that "an open source version of [the] Linux client [is] being developed." This open-source client is part of some larger offering that supposedly will be coming down the pipe at Skype. These efforts will also help them get Skype adopted within Linux distributions and seeing Skype on other new platforms.

Before you get too excited though, it's very likely that the Skype protocol will remain proprietary but just the client above that will be open-source under an unknown license. We're waiting on more news from Skype as this may turn out to be quite interesting.

[size=1em]Yes, there's an open source version of Linux client being developed. This will be a part of larger offering, but we can't tell you much more about that right now. Having an open source UI will help us get adopted in the "multicultural" land of Linux distributions, as well as on other platforms and will speed up further development. We will update you once more details are available.

Symbian is one of the top Mobile Operating Systems currently available on the market, in fact companies such as Sony Ericsson and most notably Nokia run the OS on nearly all of their mobile devices, a testament to the success of Symbian. In this article I list my Top 10 Symbian Applications.




1. Google Search Client For Symbian DevicesThe Symbian Google Client is a program that integrates with your devices idle screen, that is if your device offers a "Ctrl" or "encil/Edit" key, or via the application launcher found on Symbian based devices. By typing in searches in the provided box Google can access the internet, find your queries and display the necessary information in a mobile formatted display for easy access. Unlike the standard internet Google search from your mobile device, the Symbian Google Client is also built to render searches faster, and display the information in an easier to read display.



2. Nokia Email Service For SymbianNokia really wanted to make sure everyone knew what this program did, so they named it Nokia Email Service to showcase the obvious. The program essentially offers connections between popular email clients such as GMail, Yahoo! Mail, and ISP email accounts (of which thousands are listed as compatible). Users can also access their Microsoft Exchange Server Accounts, while handling both POP and IMAP account alike. Fring is one of the best Voip and Data chat programs available for any Mobile platform. The program allows users to make VOIP calls when WiFi is available, or to utilize their data plan for voice and text based chatting. Fring supports the most popular in mobile chat programs including Skype, MSN Messenger, ICQ, Google Talk, SIP, Twitter, AIM, and Yahoo.
With these applications users can tell if their friends are available before they place a call or leave a message, and they can make cheap calls via Skype and other applications without wasting their cell phone minutes. 4. Google Maps For SymbianSo far I've included Google Maps on My Top 10 Windows Mobile and Top 10 Blackberry Apps, so it only makes sense that I also include it on my Top 10 Symbian Apps page. The reason I've included Google Maps everywhere is because it simply works equally well on each platform.
With Google Maps users can find Points Of Interest (POI's), receive Turn-By-Turn Directions, and even search local businesses and call them by clicking on the selected business phone number. Google Maps works with built-in GPS receivers

and assisted GPS offerings. It can even operate using My Location Based Services when GPS is not present, offering proximity calculations to within 1000 meters. If you don't want to pay for expensive mapping then Google Maps is not only free, it works better than many paid software programs currently available on the market.

For the fitness enthusiast with built-in GPS capabilties there are few programs as good as Nokia Sports Tracker. With this program Runners, Cyclists, and even Walkers can track their average speeds, the altitude at which they are travelling, the total distance they've gone and much more. The program even allows users to show their workout routes via Google Earth, while a Facebook app can be added so you and your circle of friends can compare your workout details and overall progress. If you're motivated by competition, or you just want to show off your workout routine, then i'd suggest taking a look at Nokia Sports Tracker.

6. Nokia Podcasting For SymbianWith this very useful program users can add, delete and overall manage their podcasts directly from their Symbian Based devices. You can download your favorite podcasts directly to your phone via either WiFi connectivity or using your devices mobile data connection. With Nokia Podcasting you don't even need to manage your podcast subscription on your PC, it can all be downloaded directly on your cell phone.


7. ShoZu For SymbianDo you create a lot of videos and photos and upload them to popular portals such as YouTube and Flickr? If you do, you'll love ShoZu. With this useful Symbian application, users can tag, categorize, and upload their media to the portals of their choice (as long as they're supported by Shozu). While working on your favorite files ShoZu will also allow you to surf the web and send text messages to other online users. Its a free program and its very inuitive for any level user.



8. Handy TaskMan For SymbianTaking a note from the Microsoft Windows front, Handy TaskMan allows users to open a taskbar and examine which applications are running on their device at any given time. The TaskMan application also allows users to see what percentage of their CPU is being used by each application, and offers the ability to close applications with the simple click of a button

9. Opera Mini For SymbianI've mentioned Opera Mini for Windows and Blackberry devices, and that's because its the best Mobile Browser on the market, and the Symbian Version is no different. Opera Mini allows users to easily zoom in and out on pages which means you can view the pages as they were meant to be seen. Opera Mini also offers faster page load rendering than other mobile browsers, and offers a download and upload manager, while also offering the ability to save pages to offline mode for viewing at a later time.
You can even synchronize your Opera 9.5 desktop browser bookmarks with the mobile version for easy integration on both. Overall it's the most competent Mobile browser on the market regardless of the Mobile Operating System you use. It's simply leaps and bounds ahead of other Symbian web browsers.



10. Agile MessengerDo you spend much of your time in front of your computer balancing between various instant messaging programs? If you do, then Agile Messenger is for you.
Agile allows users to connect to MSN Messenger, AIM, Yahoo! and Wireless Village IM programs. The program takes advantage of T9 texting which will greatly speed up your IM times, while also offering a data counter so you'll always known how many kilobytes you save, send and receive. Instant messages are also easily laid out in a threaded format to make viewing easier than ever from your Symbian based device. Overall the best multiple account instant messaging program i've found for Symbian.

When great thinkers think about problems, they start to see patterns. They look at the problem of people sending each other word-processor files, and then they look at the problem of people sending each other spreadsheets, and they realize that there's a general pattern: sending files. That's one level of abstraction already. Then they go up one more level: people send files, but web browsers also "send" requests for web pages. And when you think about it, calling a method on an object is like sending a message to an object! It's the same thing again! Those are all sending operations, so our clever thinker invents a new, higher, broader abstraction called messaging, but now it's getting really vague and nobody really knows what they're talking about any more. When you go too far up, abstraction-wise, you run out of oxygen. Sometimes smart thinkers just don't know when to stop, and they create these absurd, all-encompassing, high-level pictures of the universe that are all good and fine, but don't actually mean anything at all.
These are the people I call Architecture Astronauts. It's very hard to get them to write code or design programs, because they won't stop thinking about Architecture. They're astronauts because they are above the oxygen level, I don't know how they're breathing. They tend to work for really big companies that can afford to have lots of unproductive people with really advanced degrees that don't contribute to the bottom line.
A recent example illustrates this. Your typical architecture astronaut will take a fact like "Napster is a peer-to-peer service for downloading music" and ignore everything but the architecture, thinking it's interesting because it's peer to peer, completely missing the point that it's interesting because you can type the name of a song and listen to itright away.
All they'll talk about is peer-to-peer this, that, and the other thing. Suddenly you have peer-to-peer conferences, peer-to-peer venture capital funds, and even peer-to-peer backlash with the imbecile business journalists dripping with glee as they copy each other's stories: "eer To Peer: Dead!"

The Architecture Astronauts will say things like: "Can you imagine a program likeNapster where you can downloadanything, not just songs?" Then they'll build applications like Groove that they think are more general than Napster, but which seem to have neglected that wee little feature that lets you type the name of a song and then listen to it -- the feature we wanted in the first place. Talk about missing the point. If Napsterwasn't peer-to-peer but it did let you type the name of a song and then listen to it, it would have been just as popular.
Another common thing Architecture Astronauts like to do is invent some new architecture and claim it solves something. Java, XML, Soap, XmlRpc, Hailstorm, .NET, Jini, oh lord I can't keep up. And that's just in the last 12 months!
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with these architectures... by no means. They are quite good architectures. What bugs me is the stupendous amount of millennial hype that surrounds them. Remember the Microsoft Dot Net white paper?

The next generation of the Windows desktop platform, Windows.NET supports productivity, creativity, management, entertainment and much more, and is designed to put users in control of their digital lives.

That was about 9 months ago. Last month, we got Microsoft Hailstorm.That white paper says:

People are not in control of the technology that surrounds them....HailStorm makes the technology in your life work together on your behalf and under your control.

These three facts (you are the new sys admin, computers are nowhere, the one computer is everywhere) should combine to improve the world of using computers as computers -- by making the boundaries of computers disappear, by making the computer be everywhere, and by making the details of working with the computer as simple as putting a DVD into your home theater system.

And don't even remind me of the fertilizer George Gilder spread about Java:

A fundamental break in the history of technology...

That's one sure tip-off to the fact that you're being assaulted by an Architecture Astronaut: the incredible amount of bombast; the heroic, utopian grandiloquence; the boastfulness; the complete lack of reality. And people buy it! The business press goes wild!
Why the hell are people so impressed by boring architectures that often amount to nothing more than a new format on the wire for RPC, or a new virtual machine? These things might be good architectures, they will certainly benefit the developers that use them, but they arenot, I repeat, not, a good substitute for the messiah riding his white ass into Jerusalem, or world peace. No, Microsoft, computers are notsuddenly going to start reading our minds and doing what we want automatically just because everyone in the world has to have a Passport account. No, Sun, we're not going to be able to analyze our corporate sales data "as simply as putting a DVD into your home theatre system."

Remember that the architecture people are solving problems that they think they can solve, not problems which are useful to solve. Soap + WSDL may be the Hot New Thing, but it doesn't really let you do anything you couldn't do before using other technologies -- if you had a reason to. All that Distributed Services Nirvana the architecture astronauts are blathering about was promised to us in the past, if we used DCOM, or JavaBeans, or OSF DCE, or CORBA.
It's nice that we can use XML now for the format on the wire. Whoopee. But that's about as interesting to me as learning that my supermarket uses trucks to get things from the warehouse. Yawn.Mangos, that's interesting. Tell me something new that I can do that I couldn't do before, O Astronauts, or stay up there in space and don't waste any more of my time.

这种仅有触摸屏幕的有个问题阿，如果和iphone一样，没有鼠标指针显示，就没有移动鼠标到某处（不点击）的功能，看网页的时候有时候有麻烦，如果用平常的软件，也应该会有问题。象iphone那样把软件操作简化才行。

5800固件升级到V40版本以后，内置的GPS不联网也可以用，可以和专业的GPS媲美，适合驾车导航。

下载的Google Map用起来也不错，适于找地方和步行，3G的流量1M相当于打电话1分钟的价钱。

关注新版Google Phone，更好。

点不亮，是指主机上电，但显示器没显示。还是主机根本就不上电？如果是前一种情况的话，建议先把内存拔掉，然后开机，听有没有报警声（一般是长鸣）。然后再拔电，重新插上内存开机看是否可以点亮。一般时间久了的机子都会存在内存接触不良的情况。可以把条子拿下用橡皮擦下金手指。

Working in the field of project management requires a number of distinct skills. A project manager needs to be able to define the scope of a project clearly, estimate the cost and time required to complete it, set deliverables and specifications for every stage from start to finish, and allocate the needed resources as efficiently as possible.


The ability to manage people is also a critical skill. A good project manager can deal productively with a broad range of stakeholders, including employees, clients, subcontractors and others affected by the project. He or she will need to sign off on major decisions, such as change orders, while choosing the best possible team to make day-to-day decisions.


Project Manager (PM): The person with overall responsibility for planning and managing a project. A project manager needs to begin by setting clear objectives.


Sponsor: The person who has authority over a project, provides funding, approves scope changes and champions the project within an organization. The project sponsor is usually a representative of the client, since the client has commissioned and funded the project. The sponsor should provide high-level guidance while letting the project manager handle day-to-day issues.


Stackeholder: Anyone who has an interest in a project or will be affected by it. Stakeholders can be people inside or outside the organization carrying out the project.


Subcontractor: A business or person who is paid to do part of the work assigned to another person or company.


Scope: The overall definition of what the project is supposed to accomplish. Including the project's goal, the resources to be used to carry it out, and a specific description of the expected end result. eg, The scope of this project is a complete redesign of our customer database.


Deliverables: A deliverable may be either a physical object, such a newly designed product, or an outcome, such as the completion of a business plan. eg, For a project to succeed, its deliverables need to be both achievable and clearly defined.


Specifications (specs): Specifications are detailed descriptions of the deliverables for a project and include all the technical, time and cost requirements of a project.


Baseline: A set of standards for a project, usually based on previous experience, that can be used to evaluate its progress. The baseline will include the project's expected costs, schedule and any technical requirements. eg, Out baseline expectation is to complete the project by December at a cost of no more than $4 million.


Resources: All items needed to complete a project, such as a tool, supply item, facility or person.


To estimate( an estimate, an estimation): To calculate or guess the value, size or amount of something. eg, The value of the deal is estimated at $12 million.


Top-down estimate: An estimate for the cost, time, and risks of a project made by looking at the entire project from the top down, or in great detail, and comparing it to similar projects in the past. eg. Richard has worked on several similar projects before, so he can give us a top-down estimate of how much this one should cost.


To allocate: To decide that an amount of money, time or other resources should be used for a certain purpose. to allocate funds, to allocate resources. eg. Du Pont has allocated funds to build two new factories in Asia.


Contingency: A planned allocation of resources that are to be used in the event that something unforeseen, such as a bad weather, affects the completion of a project according to the schedule.


Change Order: A request for a change in a project's scope, deliverables or cost. Most large projects will require change orders, either because the project manager sees the need for changes or because the client's needs have changed. eg. @glif 所有带 “温”、“习”、“吴”、“李”、“胡”、“贺”、“周”、“贾”、“黄”等字的词语。 #GFW_Words 据说是九大常委的姓，全都变成敏感词了，搜索之后Google立即被墙，我这里搜索任意包含“胡”和“温”字的关键词，都是被墙的。

看看上面这张图片，是今天3月25号谷歌热榜上上升最快的几个关键词。我刚才测试了一下，搜索这几个关键词的时候，Google的速度极慢，那是因为：
