BRITISH violinist Nigel Kennedy does not like labels and the only protocol in his rehearsal room is to turn up on time.
In Adelaide yesterday, the world-renowned musician once dubbed the bad boy of classical music kissed hands, cracked jokes and lavished praise on members of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra during rehearsal for a concert tomorrow night at Festival Theatre.

Kennedy will perform Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. That virtually made him a household name, and made it into the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling classical recording of all time.

"With The Four Seasons, there's a lot of great energy and every orchestra is different," he said of playing the work countless times.

"You pick up different vibes and energy from different people and individuals in the orchestra, and that gives a fresh lease of life to it."

Kennedy, 49, last played in Adelaide in 1991. The following year, he withdrew from public performance completely, returning five years later to critical acclaim.

"I certainly enjoy music more than ever before. There's probably a little bit more spontaneity in it now than there might have been when I was an 18-year old and being told by everybody what I should do and even trying for a little while to conform to what everyone else's perception of being a musician is," he said. "There are all these stereotypes which I really don't like very much in music, I think music should be more than that."
