How to become a master at being interviewed!
That very first interview is important! It gives your potential employer an insight into who you are and the way you work. Making a mistake in this interview can quite often ruin your chances of getting that job.
So here are some tips that will help you master the interview process:
Research, Research, Research: When you land that important interview always make sure you research the company. Walking in to an interview and not knowing about the company is one way you may not be asked for a second one or even get the job. Make sure you look up the company website, LinkedIn and Facebook. Also if you know any contacts in the company get information from them as well.
Practice Makes Perfect: If you can, get a list of interview questions you may be asked. If you can’t then research online the most commonly asked interview questions or on MACRO’s website. Write down what your answers would be to the questions and practice, practice, practice! Also write down the selection criteria for the role and how you meet these criteria. Practice saying this out loud so you get used to saying it. Going to the interview and not being prepared shows the employer a lack of understanding of the job and that you are not interested in the position.
Know where you are going: Make sure you know the time and location of the interview and the person you are seeing when you get there. If possible make a practice run or look up where it is. Being late to the interview can make you nervous and will also give the impression to the employer you are not very punctual.
Present Yourself Well: A few days before the interview make sure the outfit you plan to wear is clean and pressed. Always assume that it is corporate wear and wear the appropriate attire. If you are unsure about what you are wearing ask a friend or family member for their opinion. Remember you will not only be assessed on what you say but on body language, how you are dressed and if you are eager.
The Interview: When introduced always try and remember who is who. In the interview remember to sell yourself. Even if you are not comfortable doing this other candidates will be so if you want the job you will need to sell yourself. Always remain positive when asked a question, make sure you put a positive spin on it and show the employer what you can do.
Question Time: You are now at the end of the interview and the employer asks you ‘Do you have any questions?’ Always be prepared to ask the employer questions, it shows you are interested and you have been listening during the interview. Some great questions to ask are:
What do you like best about working here?
What goals do you expect the person who takes this job to achieve?
How is performance rewarded and recognised?
What is the next step in the process?
How would you describe your management style?
How would you describe the work culture here? What types of people tend to really thrive, and what types don’t do as well?
Are there any reservations you have about my fit for the position that I could address now?
Going to interviews does not need to be nerve racking or a chore. If you practice the answers to the questions and go prepared the interview will be a breeze. Being unprepared will ensure that you will not get the job or be asked for a second interview. Make sure you are prepared and go to the interview with a smile on your face and a positive attitude.
