take pity on someone

Example: John took pity on the thirsty guy and gave him water.

4. likewise (the same)

Cynthia has been the most hardworking student so far.
In one of the Thursday evenings, some of our teachers went to the class without having dinner. Cynthia took pity on us and brought us tasty food. She was so kind that she never asked for any reimbursement.
