I was inspired by pinxinge's idea of recording daily life in Australia and feel it's a good way to improve English.
Honestly speaking, I feel my English became worse after landing here. It's a horrifying fact but true. I had expected a lot more chance to use this language and a rapid improvement. In the first few days/weeks, I did talk a lot, introducing myself, asking for basic information which is necessary for daily life, etc. However, as time goes by, I start to realize that I speak less and less every day.
My chat with colleagues is very simple. As I hardly understand what they talked with each other, it's imporssible for me to join in their conversations easily. It might just be a simple joke, or something happened recently in the local community, but I just don't understand! Most of the time, I may know every word they speak but don't know what they're talking about. It's realy frustrating!
I guess this is the bar we have to come across, the culture / background differences. As someone in this forum said, as a new comer in this country, we're like new babies and have a lot to learn, no matter a treet name, a local retailer name or a way of doing things...
Maybe, it's not my English itself but my confidence on my language and communication ability that became less. I feel reluctant to begin a chat, feel clumsy when I try to speak a new word, and always worry about the grammar mistakes in my sentence. Those I never cared so much when I was in China, because I knew anyway people could understand me, or anyway my audience was not native speaker and wouldn't notice the mistakes much.
Here it's different. You can see the surprise on people's face and realize you didn't express it well, maybe with a wrong word or phrase. You can easily notice the mistakes you make and be aware that people are bearing you for them. It's not a good feeling and a reminder of your poor....poor...poor....English.
To speak or not speak? It's a question.
Do you have similar experience or have you resolved the issue already? I'm look forward to your sharing. Thanks.
