Let's look at some facts
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_busiest_passenger_air_routes
Sydney-Melbourne is one of the world's busies passenger air routes, and Sydney-Brisbane is not too far behind in the rankings. So there is definitely a market for high speed rail, at least between the major cities is this country.
Another major concern is energy cost. Planes need oil to fly, cars need oil to run. There are NO major replacements for liquid fuel in the transportation sector. People need to be aware that global conventional oil production HAS peaked in May 2005, while demand has been increasing every single year. Fancy driving when oil is $3/L?
Europe had the vision to build a massive train transit system, run on electricity generated largely by nuclear power (France as a prime example). So did Japan. The US is falling far behind in this regard. Australia has vast uranium reserves in its ground. We should make use of it. The government should get out of the way, allow uranium exploration, cut red tape, and let the private sector and the market do its job, period.
Unfortunately this is only wishful thinking, nothing will be done any time soon.
